..no matter what they say.

“You say I’m beautiful, I understand. You say I’m ugly, I understand.
Those are your thoughts about me, what do I have to do with it?”
Byron Katie

Usually, I roll my eyes and make some snide comment about my mom’s constant flow of motivational talk. I will admit that I often can connect to the quotes that she now so wisely chooses to send my way, but it’s been many years that it tends to bounce off me before I have a chance to internalize it all. However, this one was a keeper.

I have always been frustrated by the paradox of being called conceited if you compliment yourself and modest if you put yourself down. We’re not allowed to compliment ourselves, it’s so arrogant! But man, I can’t stand listening to people talk poorly about themselves. We all take the same route, though. More often than not, we tend to prefer to come across as hating ourselves rather than have people think that we’re conceited. What is this saying?

Let’s face it: we can’t control what people think or feel about us. What should that matter? And why aren’t we allowed to have our own positive opinions of ourselves?

I’m a little scrawny, I have buck teeth (though, definitely a lot more grown into them), my hair gets frizzy and I’m so pale I’m practically transparent. And I’m beautiful. But, you know, that’s just my opinion.
