newsflash: meaning of “exercise” changed?
An associate called me to the front of the store the other day and – upon my arrival to the service desk – told me I was no longer needed. “Oh well,” I responded, “I needed the exercise.”
They both laughed, looked me up and down and handed me a really unnecessary, “Yeah right.“
I hate this. I get the same response whenever I comment that I’m incredibly out of shape, as if I just told them I’m morbidly obese. Last I checked, everyone needed to exercise (in moderation..). However, the word “exercise” seems like it became synonymous with “lose weight.” Exercise and activity is necessary to a healthy lifestyle.
It’s really amazing. Don’t they start teaching us this in like.. kindergarten? Exercise is part of a healthy lifestyle. Along with eating right, it is necessary for keeping all your different systems stable and in order, keeping your organs in shape, blood pressure leveled, and other things that I’m not sure of because I’m not a doctor or a physical education teacher. I do know that keeping your body in shape is necessary, though.
I’m incredibly out of shape because I haven’t (properly) exercised in about 6 years. Breathing is difficult, my blood pressure is still a little low, my heart races just from walking up the stairs, and running 5 feet runs me into the ground. I call that out of shape. This does not relate to my weight, my size.. just the fact that I could improve my energy level, strengthen my muscles and my heart, and be a more active member of society.
Can we say anything these days without it connecting to weight loss?

Oct 17, 09 at 10:03 pmI agree. I was horribly out of shape last year. I was still considered “thin” but there is a difference between “thin” and “fit” which has little to do with weight. I was a very unhealthy relatively (compared to most women I knew) thin person, yet, I wasn’t fit at all. I slowly became active, I began with walking a mile at a time. Its still work, but becoming “fit” is one of the best things that I’ve ever done, it just “feels” different from being just thin. My asthma has improved greatly and my energy levels have increased and I’ve always been a very un-energetic person.
